I will be playing in the Mesquite Amatuer for the first time in 2013, and have a couple of questions. I will be in the Super Senior Division, can anyone tell me the approximate yardage that is played for this flight? Also I plan on getting to Mesquite a couple of days early, do they have any pre tournament games like they do at the World Am?

We look forward to having you participate in this years event. For the Super Seniors depending on your handicap you will be playing from around 6100 yards (whites at most courses). There are people that do pre tournament skins game and practice rounds. A lot of them monitor the blog and I am sure will be more than happy to give you information.

In previous years we had an earlier starting time for each round. This past year you decided to move it to 8:30 starts. Our last round at Conestoga lasted well over 6 hours. We waited on almost every tee box in probably the hottest day I ever experienced in the Mesquite Am. On my job I work outside. Heat stress and heat stroke is one of the safety concerns of my profession being a lineman. There were definitely too many of the players who started to feel the effects of heat stress. One of my friends from one of the Senior divisions passed out and had to have medical assistance.
Could you reconsider your stance on 8:30 starts vs. 7:30 starts like we had in the past? It’s amazing what a difference an hour makes. Getting the players off the course before they experience too much of the heat of the day should be a concern. It probably wouldn’t have been an issue if we were done in 4 hours.

We did have the round start at 8am this year and you are correct the rounds were long on some courses. I have addressed with the courses to have their marshall’s be more active this year to encourage people to increase their pace of play. We are looking at pushing back the tee times to 7:30am starts. We had a lot of requests for people to push it to 8am and we wanted to give it a try.
Like everything else we will look to see which will work better. Once we make that decision we will let everyone know. We look forward to seeing you in 2013.
